First, the decision to be a stay-at-home mom is significant.
Many women put their careers and other ambitions on hold so they can take on this new role.
I remember when I was just starting to be a Stay At Home Mom.
Many of my friends were like, “how will you survive being a housewife?”
Well, I don’t want just to survive.
I want to thrive!
Over the years, I’ve learned that a large part of our ability to thrive as Stay At Home Moms come from us.
It comes from having a positive mindset, energy, and the ability to prioritise and manage time.

The ten best ways to remain relevant as a Stay At Home Mom
Staying suitable as a Stay At Home Mom is very important for your sanity.
No one likes to be ignored, not in the office nor at home where you ought to be loved.
When you get ignored, it can cause depression and feelings of unhappiness.
This is why you must maintain your relevance in the family and in society so that they will rate you.
Here are some tips that will help you to remain relevant as a Stay At Home Mom.
1. Do not allow yourself to look unkempt.
Remember the old saying: dress the way you want to be addressed!!!
This also applies even to you, who is mostly at home as a SAHM.
You sit at home all day with a wrapper tied over your chest, and you want to be addressed as relevant how?
My dear, you lose that wrapper and lose irrelevancy.
Get up in the morning, have a bath, wear makeup and dress sweet.
You would see how open and ready your mind will be to pick up new things.
2. Sign up to learn new skills:
This has a way of keeping your brain active, and a functioning brain thinks fast and obviously wouldn’t start lagging 😎
What is the most straightforward skill set you can learn or improve on?
Your writing skills, learn a new language, the world is going the tech way.
A skill in that line will not be a bad idea.
The top 10 in-demand tech skills include the following:
- Machine Learning
- Artificial Intelligence
- Cloud Computing
- Data Science
- Data Analytics
- Business Analysis
- Project Management
- Programming Language
- Software Development.
You can pick one of these and learn.
For those who are not so good in the kitchen🧐… use the time to sharpen your culinary skill.
3. Be your cheerleader, set goals and achieve them:
Being a stay home mom hasn’t put an end to setting goals and cheering yourself to achieve them.
These goals will keep your mind sharp and your creativity challenged.
Not only is it a great way to express your originality, but it will also help keep you moving forward, both personally and professionally.
Examples of such goals could be: I will read three self-improving pieces of literature this month, I am going to work out every morning at the gym, etc.
See to it you follow through with these goals.
4. Get a Remote or freelance job:
This here would keep you busy and earn you some money bags while still having all the time for your family.
- Flex job
- Solid gigs
- Just remote
- We work remotely
- Skip the drive
- Working Nomads

5. Volunteer for a noble course:
Especially in Nigeria, people who volunteer do not get paid or are paid next to nothing.
But volunteering helps you remain knowledgeable, gain more experience and keep your skill sharp.
And just in case you would want to go back to the corporate world, that space on your resume will not be blank 😁.
6. Join a professional organisation:
A professional organisation or circle would help keep you informed on changes in your career path.
It would also help you connect with like minds, and keep your mind busy on what goes on even while you are not currently at work.
7. Read Read Read!!!
Invest in yourself by reading journals, articles, books no matter your field.
It keeps your brain sharp.
And you can confidently make inputs in conversation, especially when it involves a concept you have read about.
8. Don’t stop Dreaming:
Being a Stay At Home Mom doesn’t stop you from making a mental picture of what you want to achieve in your career in a couple of months.
As you embrace the time and season of being a stay home mom, plan the kind of future you want for yourself and your kids.
9. Look through your resume/CV:
Doing this would help you see areas you need to improve your resume.
You can clearly see where you need to grow, and you are propelled to begin volunteering, get a certificate course, or further training.
After the training, you can update your CV boldly and decorate it with your new badges.🥂
You don’t want to go back to the corporate world with a poor CV/resume.
10. Connect with other moms:
I will conclude with this last tip.
Being a Stay At Home Mom shouldn’t make you become a stay alone mom.🤦♀️
Connect with other moms; you could ask questions about concerns and share ideas.
This would keep you updated and posted on new trends.
